The recent Stack’s Bowers Galleries auction showcased a remarkable collection of special Britannia and Sovereign bullion coins on behalf of The Royal Mint, achieving an impressive total of over $5.1 million in prices.
These coins, part of the Royal Succession coin series, hold a unique place in history as they mark the transition from Queen Elizabeth II’s effigy to King Charles III’s portrait on British coinage.
Each of these Royal Succession coins tells a significant story in the annals of both British and global history.
To ensure their quality and authenticity, these coins underwent grading and encapsulation by the esteemed Numismatic Guaranty Company.
The auction itself was a lively affair, lasting nearly nine hours on August 21, with enthusiastic collectors and investors fiercely competing for these historical treasures.
This intense bidding activity resulted in numerous record-breaking prices and, remarkably, a 100% sell-through rate for all 690 lots, underscoring the profound importance and desirability of these coins.
Two remarkable Britannia gold coins secured the highest prices in the auction. The last 1-ounce gold Britannia coin minted during Queen Elizabeth II’s reign fetched an impressive $50,000.
In contrast, the very first 1-ounce gold Britannia coin produced under the reign of King Charles III commanded a substantial $42,000.
These two coins have now claimed the titles of the most valuable 1-ounce gold Britannia coins ever sold at auction since the series was inaugurated back in 1987, according to Stack’s Bowers.
Notably, the last and first gold Sovereign coins also achieved remarkable results, commanding prices of $42,000 and $34,000, respectively.
Furthermore, the silver 1-ounce Britannia coins established new price records yet again, with the last coin minted under Queen Elizabeth II fetching $19,000 and the inaugural coin under King Charles III realizing $18,000.
This successful collaboration between Stack’s Bowers Galleries and The Royal Mint follows a previous groundbreaking partnership between Stack’s Bowers Galleries and the United States Mint in 2022.
In that endeavor, Stack’s Bowers Galleries facilitated the sale of special transitional coins from the American Eagle bullion coin series, which ultimately yielded over $4.6 million in total sales on behalf of the United States Mint.
