Collecting coins is fun until you have a lot of coins and need help organizing them.
I was in your shoes before. Having fun collecting coins, I realized I had too many coins and wondered how to organize them.
So I started to think and came up with these 4 ways to organize my coin collection.
Ways to Organize Your Coin Collection:
By Mint
You can organize your collection by the mint if you’re a coin collector.
The process of organizing by the mint is fairly straightforward: first, list all the mints or countries that issued coins in your collection.
Then, determine which country issued each coin. After this step, organize each series of coins according to their respective country of origin.
For example, if the series contains 50 coins from seven different countries, then write “7” on the first line and “50” on the second line (as shown below).
Organize by Coin Type
Another way to organize your coin collection is by type. The most common types of coins are:
- United States Coins
- Canadian Circulation Coins
- Tokens and Medals
- Commemorative Coins
- Issued by the US Mint or other government authorities for a special occasion or event are usually not intended for circulation; these may be worth more than their face value if in good condition but less than that if they have been damaged.
- Some tokens are considered collectible as numismatic items and jewelry items due to their designs and materials used in making them.
- Bullion
- A term describing any precious metal product with a value defined by its weight rather than its purity.
- Bullion can be stored unallocated in an allocated account/vault system such as GoldMoney or at home within an allocated storage system such as BullionVault.
Organize by Coin Value
The value of your collection will determine how you organize it. There are four ways you can organize your coins.
Based on their coin value, the date they were issued, the type of coin they are, and where they were minted. The first method is the easiest way to do so.
However, if you have a huge collection with thousands of coins, this method may not work for you as it may take up too much space in one place, making an organization difficult.
The second method works best if you want something simple but effective.
In addition, this method only requires small storage space compared to other methods that require more room for extensive collections due to multiple types being organized together in one place (e.g., by date).
Organize by Coin Set
Organizing your coin set by coin set is a popular way to sort and display coins. If you have multiple collections, this is an ideal way to organize them all.
- How To Organize Coin Collection: Start by organizing your collection into folders or binders. Then label each folder with the date range of the coins in it. For example, if I had a folder called “1987-1992,” it would only contain coins dated between 1987 and 1992 (not including those years).
- What Is The Best Way To Sort A Coin Collection: There are many ways you can sort your collection based on different criteria such as type, year minted, etc., but we recommend sorting them by their metal composition first because it will make it easier to find specific denominations later on down the road without having to dig through every single folder individually just looking for a certain denomination dollar coin from 1981–1982!
