Numismatics is the study of coin collecting. It comes from the Latin word “numisma,” which means coin, and then it refers to someone who studies coins for their historical significance and monetary value. Numismatics is a term used to describe the study of the tangible presence of various payment forms, such as currencies. Numismatics studies coin creation, use, and rarity when applied to coins. This is not the case for coin collectors who collect coins without knowing how they were made or their history. A coin collector usually collects coins for fun and may not be interested in the history behind coin making or the value attached to old rare coin collections.

A coin collector can be someone who collects coins from around the world or just one particular country, or even thematic coin collecting (i.e., only collecting silver dollar-sized coins). There are many different kinds of coin collectors and many reasons people collect coins.

A coin collector can also be an individual who only collects rare coins for investment purposes. They are not interested in coin collecting as a hobby but instead want to make money off their coin collection.

Before you go…

In a nutshell, coin collector is called by many different names, but the most common term is Numismatist. This is because they study coins and their history in-depth to expand their knowledge of the subject matter. Coin collecting is a fun and exciting hobby that anyone can enjoy!
