Are Funko Pops meant to be taken out of the box? It’s entirely up to you and “loose” Funko Pops are still available at neighborhood comic book stores even without a box.

Every Funko Pop collector has debated whether to keep their collection’s boxes or remove them to display them. The community regularly debates this issue.

An in-depth discussion of the benefits and drawbacks of in-the-box versus out-of-the-box collecting is provided in our article. Let’s start with the following:

If taken out of their box, Funko Pops lose much value. Depending on the figure, the amount varies, but we’re talking about a value reduction of up to 70%.

For instance, an $80 Funko Pop will only be worth up to $24. That’s considerably less than what you could get if you kept it in the box when you sold it. So now, PSA assigns Funko pop boxes a conditional grade.

Therefore, that $80 pop will increase and appreciate even more (up to $125) if you receive a 10 grade from PSA.

In a separate article, we go into more detail about how to have your Funko Pop graded by PSA. But contrary to what you might believe, the initial query is much more complicated.

Unfortunately, because the packaging is integral to the collectible, Funko pops without the box lose value. The boxes help stack the figures up walls and onto shelves, and they can be signed to preserve the mint condition of the actual figure.

It’s one thing to know that a Funko Pop loses value when it’s not in its original packaging, but we’re interested in how much. And that’s what we’ll be investigating today. So if you intend to sell your Funko Pops figures in the future, we advise keeping them in their original packaging.

However, if you intend to display a specific Funko figure and it features a character you adore, by all means, leave the packaging off and display the pop in all its splendor.

The community’s consensus is that the collector should do whatever feels right to them. This makes sense because, after all, the collector owns the toy. Most serious collectors choose to keep the figure in its packaging, though.

Pros and Cons of Taking Funko Pops Out of the Box:

Pros:

  • Photography – Photographic opportunities abound with Funko Pops. (OOB) out of the Box Funko Pop figures are necessary if you want a dedicated Instagram page.
  • Saves space — It should go without saying that keeping the Funko Pop figure in its box results in additional clutter, another issue that plagues the sector. The Pops look sleeker, don’t reflect off the box in low light, and, to be honest, look fantastic. The display looks nicer overall.
  • Boxes collect more dust — Due to their greater surface area, cleaning and blowing your boxes will take much longer than cleaning the figure alone.

Cons:

  • Value Drops – A Pop in its Box will not sell for nearly as much as one that is unpackaged, which is true of all toys, Funko or not. Value plummets significantly.
  • Harder to Display – Extensive collections are harder to display because Pop Funko boxes stack, which makes it more likely that you would run out of room without them if you had an extensive collection.
  • Maintaining Perfect Condition – By serving as a cushion against drops, the box can protect the figure from damage.
  • Harder to Organize – Funko figures come from hundreds of TV shows, movies, and video games; organizing them without the box is more difficult.

Takeaway:

So always keep your Funko in the box if you ever want to sell it! It will typically sell for 147.49% more than it would without it.

Unpack that Funko and proudly display it to show off your Pop figure collection, whether to impress your friends or add some color to your fantastic gaming or hobby room!

Keep in mind (and pay attention to this): A softbox protector is necessary if you want to resell your Pop Figure or guarantee that it stays undamaged in its box.

Before you go…

We hope this article has helped you decide whether it’s worth taking your Funko Pops out of the box. We believe that you should never forget the original intention behind each piece of art and whether or not taking it out of its package will disrupt that intent.
